Visiting a patient at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin
NOTICE: Temporary child visitor restriction
Due to the serious nature of this flu season, a temporary visitor restriction has been implemented at both our Milwaukee and Fox Valley hospitals.
- Children under the age of 12 are NOT allowed to visit any patient who is hospitalized.
Visit chw.org/flu for more information and updates.
Visiting hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Parents, grandparents or legal guardians may visit any time. All other visitors will be asked to leave at 8 p.m.
Parents or guardians create a visitor list when their child is admitted. Only the parent or guardian can add names to the list. All visitors, including family members, must be on the list to visit your child. For safety reasons we may remove people from the list. These people will not be allowed to visit. Some units have restrictions on visitors. Check with your child’s nurse.
Guidelines for visitors
For the safety of our patients, only metallic (Mylar) balloons are allowed in the hospital. Latex (rubber) balloons are not allowed.
Brothers and sisters (younger than age 18)
Visiting brothers and sisters must stay with an adult at all times. They may not stay overnight. To avoid the spread of infection, brothers and sisters may not use the patient playrooms.
The Gift Shop, located on the first floor of the hospital, is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Evening and weekend hours vary. Items include gifts and toys for all ages, newspapers, magazines, cards, candy, snacks and toiletries. Call (414) 266-2185 for more information.
Infectious diseases can be carried into a hospital from the outside. Please do not pick up, hold, feed or play with any child in the hospital but your own. You can cause harm to other patients or to yourself. This will help protect you and children you have at home from getting sick. It also protects other children in the hospital from accidental injury or illness. If any visitor has a cold, runny nose, cough, fever, diarrhea, rash, is throwing up or has any other infectious disease, do not let that person visit. If any visitors have been exposed to measles or chicken pox within the past 21 days, and never had it before, do not let them visit. Be sure all children visiting are up-to-date on their immunizations.
In the hospital – A single sleeper couch is available in most patient rooms for one parent or grandparent to stay. Please let your child’s nurse know if you wish to stay overnight. You will be asked to wear appropriate clothes for sleeping that cover your whole body. If needed, parent sleepwear is available and can be requested from your child’s care provider. The hospital will provide linens and a pillow. You will need to bring your own toiletries. Showers are available. Brothers, sisters and other minor children are not allowed to stay overnight. We encourage parents to stay with their child in the hospital. For safety reasons, we do not allow parents to sleep with their child on the parent bed. Parents also may not sleep in their child’s bed.
Hotels and motels – A list of nearby hotels and motels is available online or from the Daniel M. Soref Family Resource Center. Many of them offer discounts to parents of Children’s Hospital patients.
Ronald McDonald House – If space allows, overnight accommodations are available for Children’s Hospital patient families who live a distance away. Please contact Family Services at (414) 266-3465 to have your name placed on their waiting list.
Special guests/group visits
To protect the privacy, confidentiality and health of our patients, we limit the number and types of guests. We do not allow groups to distribute gifts or visit directly with patients. All visits must be arranged ahead of time with Child Life. Any special guests who arrive at the hospital without prior approval will be given information about how to schedule a future visit and asked to leave.
All visitors must stop at a Welcome Center each day. Staff will give visitors an identification badge. It must be worn at all times. For the safety of our patients, people with coughs, colds or illness should not visit. We reserve the right to change visitor restrictions and screening.
Welcome Centers are located throughout the hospital and in the Children’s Clinics Building. Welcome Center staff can help you with badges, directions and information.
