Abdominal computed tomography scan (CT scan)

This diagnostic imaging procedure uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce cross-sectional images (often called slices), both horizontally and vertically, of the body. A CT scan shows detailed images of any part of the body, including the bones, muscles, fat and organs. CT scans are more detailed than general X-rays. Your child will lie on a bed that moves into a doughnut-shaped machine that takes many pictures of different areas of the body. Because the machine is noisy and because your child may need to lie still for awhile with their arms over the head, doctors might give a sedative to help your child rest during the procedure.
