Neuro Intensive Care
The pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin is among the largest in the nation and few institutions can match the high quality of care and positive outcomes achieved by the critical care physicians within this team.
While all of our 24 pediatric critical care physicians care for patients with neurological issues, we are excited to have a neuro intensive care team, The team consists of six full-time, board-eligible/certified, pediatric intensivists who are focused on neuro intensive care. They work in close collaboration with physicians in neurology and neurosurgery, as well as additional subspecialties as needed, to provide the best care possible for our patients during their stay in the PICU. The care team also includes specially trained PICU nurses, respiratory therapists, dieticians, pharmacists, child life specialists and social workers.
Neuro intensive care focuses on the care of patients with many of the following conditions: traumatic brain injury (TBI), intracranial hypertension, intracranial bleeding, arteriovenous malformations, pediatric stroke, brain tumors, post-operative management of neurosurgical patients, encephalopathy, encephalitis, meningitis, status epilepticus and central diabetes insipidus.
Our goal is to provide high-quality, consistent care for all of our patients requiring neurocritical care to ensure the best possible outcomes.
