EGD (upper endoscopy) is a procedure that allows the doctor to look at the inside of your child’s esophagus, stomach and duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). The doctor will guide a thin, flexible, lighted tube called an endoscope into your child’s mouth and throat, then into the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. In addition to examining the area, the doctor may also remove a sample of tissue for biopsy at the same time. Your child will be asleep during this procedure.
