Pharmacy overview

Our pharmacy department provides centralized distributive services 24-hours a day. There are six satellite pharmacies at Children’s Hospital staffed with pharmacists.

  • Operating room pharmacy prepares intravenous medications for all operating rooms
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit pharmacy prepares intravenous infusions and provides clinical services to our 70-bed unit
  • Three Pediatric Intensive Care Unit pharmacies. Each pharmacy prepares intravenous infusions and provides clinical services to their 24-bed unit
  • Oncology Clinic pharmacy prepares all chemotherapy preparations and provides services to both inpatients and outpatients

Rounding

Pharmacists attend bedside patient care rounds with the multidisciplinary health care teams in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, all three Pediatric Intensive Care Units, Hematology/Oncology/BMT unit and general medical units.

Technology

  • Children's Hospital of Wisconsin utilizes electronic medication administration records and bar code scanning
  • Pharmacists utilize mobile computers during bedside rounding
  • Pharmacy utilizes robotics for unit dose medication packaging and bar coding
  • Automated dispensing cabinets are utilized in the central pharmacy as well as in all acute-care areas

Specialty services

  • Pediatric pharmacokinetics
  • Pharmacists respond to all Level 1 and Level 2 pediatric traumas
  • Pharmacists are active members of the Code Team and the Rapid Response Team and respond to all pediatric medical emergencies
  • Renal monitoring
  • Pharmacy Consult services for solid organ transplant patients
  • A special needs patient is a pediatric patient which is seen by five or more medical specialties and whose care is coordinated by the special needs health care team
  • Antibiotic Stewardship
  • Pharmacy Consult services for patients on the ketogenic diet
