Our specialists constantly study the causes, treatments, side effects and long-term outcomes of cancer and blood disorders so that we can provide the most advanced and best care options. We partner with other elite centers to help patients overcome some of the most difficult-to-cure types of cancer and blood disorders. Our goal is to provide a blood or marrow transplant to any child who needs one.

Our talented researchers are working to develop very promising new cellular and gene therapies for kids battling cancer and blood disorders, allowing us to deliver a level of care few others can match.
Blood and Marrow Transplant Program
- Our bone marrow transplantation program began in 1978 and has since developed into one of the premier programs for children in the nation.
- We were pioneers in pediatric bone marrow transplantation and are one of a handful of centers that have been doing allogeneic transplants since the 1980s.
- We have one of the largest hematology, oncology and bone marrow transplant programs in the country, including a multidisciplinary research staff of 32 faculty members.
- We are the preferred choice for high-risk patients referred to us from other physicians and hospitals from around the world. We use specialized methods to treat patients who relapse or do not respond well to the standard treatment plan, which includes reduced intensity transplant.
- A charter member of the National Marrow Donor Program, we conduct 40 to 45 transplants a year and have completed more than 1,100 transplants to date.
- Our research encompasses work in immunotherapy, sickle cell disease, pain management, gene therapy, survivorship and late effects, quality of life and outcomes.
- Our patients benefit from a private practice model housed within a renowned academic medical center. Our physicians are personally involved in all aspects of care and treatment, from initial phone call to post transplant and outpatient transition. Families and referring providers have a direct line of communication with our physicians.
- We are world leaders in tissue typing and offer histocompatibility testing.
- Our program has met the rigorous accreditation standards of the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy continually since 2001.
- We are internationally recognized for expertise in both autologous and allogeneic transplantation, including unrelated donor blood and marrow transplants. We are one of the largest and most successful programs in the United States utilizing unrelated individuals or mismatched family members as donors.
- Our experienced team uses cutting-edge protocols and focuses on novel translational research to deliver the most advanced care.
- Our individual treatment plans are based on child, disease and donor options. Together with families we can make the best plan for each child.
- Our partnership with the BloodCenter of Wisconsin provides access to almost all possible blood cell combinations.

Comprehensive Center for Bleeding Disorders
- Our comprehensive Hematology Program, which includes the Sickle Cell Disease Program and Comprehensive Center for Bleeding Disorders, offers expert care to children, adolescents and adults with acute and chronic blood diseases.
- We are internationally known for our clinical care and research expertise in blood and bleeding disorders.
- We were among the first in the world to treat children with sickle cell disease using hydroxyurea.
- We're home to a nationally recognized and federally funded center of excellence for bleeding and thrombotic disorders.
- We provide additional services to patients and families affected by blood disorders, including educational programs, special tests, ongoing medication management and genetic counseling.
Sickle Cell Disease Program
- A collaboration between Children’s Hospital and BloodCenter of Wisconsin, this center is a national leader in cancer and blood disorders research.
- The center's experienced staff care for more than 1,500 children and 1,000 adults.
- We actively follow more than 200 hemophilia patients and more than 1,500 patients with von Willebrand disease, platelet function defects and other rare coagulation problems, including more than 1,000 patients with clotting disorders.
- We provide an integrated approach to diagnosis and management and offer a variety of services, including diagnostic and specialized testing, physician consultation, ongoing medical management and genetic counseling. Our specialists research and use innovative therapies to treat all types of blood disorders.
- Our multidisciplinary team includes hematologists, hemophilia and coagulation nurse coordinators, a medical financial counselor, social worker, genetics associate, and a clinical research coordinator, and we partner with many other specialties.
- We offer family-centered care to children affected by sickle cell disease.
- Our physicians are committed to improving outcomes for the future, generating new ideas and therapies to offer the best care possible.
- Our Sickle Cell Disease Program is a National Institutes of Health-funded Basic and Translational Research Program, one of only 11 sites nationwide. A national leader in the sickle cell community, the program conducts critical research into the causes and treatment of sickle cell disease.
- We provide comprehensive care annually to approximately 400 children and adults with sickle cell disease.
- A multidisciplinary care team of health care providers and scientists from seven Medical College of Wisconsin departments supports patients.
David Margolis, MD, is the program director of Bone Marrow Transplant at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and professor of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Blood and Marrow Transplant at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He was named to the 2013 Best Doctors® in America List, and his clinical expertise focuses on treatment of aplastic anemia, alternative donor transplant, bone marrow failure and immune suppressive treatments. Under Dr. Margolis' leadership, Children's Blood and Marrow Transplant Program is recognized worldwide for expertise in autologous transplants (using the patient's own stem cells) and allogeneic transplants (using stem cells from a donor).
