Communicating unexpected results

Why we measure it - Sometimes an imaging test can reveal information that is unexpected. Getting back to the doctor who ordered the test quickly is a high priority for our imaging team. Our radiologists at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin have a process in place to make sure that doctors are alerted to unexpected results within 5 minutes of having the results.

What this means - Our goal is to document and report 100 percent of unexpected results within 5 minutes of interpreting the study. However, each test is different and may take from 10 minutes to 2 hours to accurately interpret results.

About the data - The graph shows the percent of time we are able to communicate unexpected results within 5 minutes to the referring provider who ordered the test.

How we provide the best care

  • Image GentlyWhen test results are ready, the doctor who ordered the test is contacted directly to discuss appropriate treatment options. Our radiologists also coordinate care with other pediatric specialty groups as needed.
  • Thank you cards are given to patients and families explaining test results.
  • The accepted standard time to report normal results to a referring provider is 24 hours. Our radiology team reports normal results with a turnaround time of 2.5 hours or less, depending on the type of test ordered.
