At Children's, we recognize that heart transplantation can be a long and sometimes confusing process for you and your child. We’ll provide you all the support, guidance and information you need - from careful evaluation of your child's condition, through surgery and follow-up care.
Heart transplants at Children's are performed in our state-of-the-art facility right here in Milwaukee. The Herma Heart Center, made up of a coalition of specialists in cardiology, critical care, anesthesia and cardiothoracic surgery, is one of the most successful programs of its kind in the country. With high volume and consistently superior outcomes, our team have been leaders in clinical innovation and academic research and have set new standards for the care of children and adults with congenital heart disease. We have been nationally recognized for the operative and post-operative care of children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
Our interstage monitoring program has been widely emulated and our pioneering use of Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) has revolutionized the way children are monitored during their operations and post-operatively during recovery. We were one of the first programs in the country to recognize that survival from cardiac surgery is not enough; survival with the best possible quality of life and neurodevelopmental outcome is really the goal. For that reason, we created the nation's first cardiac Developmental Follow-up Program which allows us to provide early recognition and targeted therapy for our patients and families.
Our pediatric heart transplant program is the fastest growing program in the region over the past decade and is the only program of its kind in Wisconsin. With an unwavering commitment to achieve the best possible outcomes for heart transplant patients here in Milwaukee as well as throughout the world, our team has contributed numerous clinical and research innovations that have changed the standard of care throughout the heart transplant community.
