Quality and Outcomes Reports - Imaging (Radiology)
Volume by type of exam
Why we measure it - Our pediatric radiology team performs more than 100,000 imaging tests on children of all ages every year. The type of test given is decided based on requests by referring physicians or determined by our specialists. Patient safety is our number one concern when performing any kind of imaging test on a child.

What this means - Our specialists have experience performing different types of imaging exams. We have high volumes for X-ray, MRI, Ultrasound and CT tests and our numbers slightly increased for Nuclear Medicine exams as well.
About the data - These data show our volumes for the different types of exams and treatments available to our patients.

What we're doing to provide the best care:
- We are part of the Image Gently campaign, an initiative of the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging. The campaign goal is to increase awareness of the opportunities to lower radiation dose when imaging children.
- Children's Hospital is one of three pediatric hospitals in the country that uses the state-of-the-art EOS low-dose radiation scanner. This scanner is mainly used for children with a spine problem called scoliosis.
- Your child's safety is our number one concern. Our radiologists review all test orders to determine if other tests can be used that do not use radiation. If an X-ray or CT scan is needed to show a better result, we use the lowest amount of radiation possible.
- Children's Hospital is accredited by the American College of Radiology for CT, MRI and Nuclear Medicine equipment.
Team approach:
- Our experienced technologists are comfortable working with children. They will educate you and your child about what to expect during an imaging scan. They use special techniques to help position your child to get the best image. Lead shielding is used, when needed, to protect the child's body as much as possible from radiation.
- Our Child Life specialists help calm and relax your child before, during and after a scan. They know many ways to help your child cope during a test. Distraction and relaxation techniques are often used such as listening to music, watching movies, and playing with games or toys.
- If you or your child have any concerns about a scheduled test, team members are available to speak with you to answer questions.
- Team members will try to do a scan without sedation. If sedation is needed, they will work with our doctors to come up with an appropriate solution that meets the child's needs.
- If your child needs sedation, one of our 35 board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists will do the sedations at our Milwaukee hospital. Sedations at our New Berlin clinic are performed and monitored by our pediatric radiologists and highly skilled nursing team. Team members have advanced training in safe sedation practices.
