Health psychology services focus on the psychological, behavioral and psychosocial issues that are associated with chronic or acute medical conditions. Behavioral consultation typically involves a number of activities including psychological and behavioral assessments, ongoing treatment (often cognitive and behavioral in nature) and staff and parent consultation. Presenting problems may include:

  • Physical and mental trauma.
  • Adherence difficulties regarding acute or chronic treatment issues.
  • Patient and family adjustment to diagnosis.
  • Disruptive behavior.
  • Assessment/treatment of psychological disorders.
  • Anxiety and resistance with medical procedures.Cognitive or other psychological assessment.
  • Preparation and follow up related to transplant procedures.

Duties inherent to inpatient behavioral consultation and liaison include chart review, discussions with staff and physicians, dictation and other documentation, coordination of referrals, and direct clinical service with patients and families (both initial consultation and follow up services during and after the admission). Ongoing liaison work with a variety of staff members can include attendance at regular staff meetings and care conferences.
