Overview

Adolescence is a time of physical, psychological and social changes unlike any period of growth and change a child has experienced before. This can present a unique set of challenges when certain health care needs arise. Adolescents have diverse health needs including those related to their physical development, nutrition, body image and emotional well-being.

The Adolescent Health and Medicine Program was created to address these diverse health care concerns facing children ages 10-21. Patients are seen in the Adolescent Health Clinic for:

  • General physical development with puberty.
  • Assessment for eating disorders.
  • Nutrition and health.
  • Sports physicals.
  • Stress and anxiety.
  • Depression.
  • Developmental and transitional periods complicated by chronic illness, developmental or learning disorders.

Specialty highlights

Under the direction of M. Susan Jay, MD, the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin have designed a strategic plan that organizes and coordinates services to enhance care for adolescents and young adults in the greater Milwaukee area. To accomplish this goal, the following steps are being taken:

  • The adolescent consultation service evaluates and offers recommendations to clinical providers caring for inpatient adolescents at Children's Hospital.
  • The Adolescent Health Clinic at Children's Hospital provides comprehensive, coordinated multidisciplinary and subspecialty care to adolescents with a variety of concerns. This clinic also serves as a resource to physicians for adolescents with general health or psychosocial needs.
  • The Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Clinic at Children's Hospital serves female patients birth to 21 years of age. E. James Aiman, MD, and Vanessa Barnabei, MD, PhD, from the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical College of Wisconsin provide care to youth and teens with specific gynecological concerns.
  • The Teen Advisory Council was developed in collaboration with the Family Services Department at Children's Hospital. The council consists of 15 teens ages 12 to 18 all of which have some experience, either inpatient or outpatient, with Children's Hospital. TAC was developed to generate critical ideas and outline concerns of adolescents and young adults residing in our area. Current projects include the creation of teen focused activity nights, a peer program and helping to design teen centered areas within the hospital.

Future program development will address:

  • An outpatient eating disorder assessment program for adolescents.
  • Adolescent developmental transitions including those with special needs, developmental delay and learning disorders.
  • Developing collaborative clinics in conjunction with existing subspecialty programs at Children's Hospital.
