Overview Staffing the only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center in Wisconsin, and one of only a few in the country, our Emergency Medicine specialists treat more than 51,000 children annually for illnesses and injuries ranging from asthma to trauma. We provide a multidisciplinary approach to provide optimum care to children and their families.
Specialty Highlights
- Children's Hospital has the only freestanding Level I Trauma Center in Wisconsin dedicated solely to the care of children, recertified by the American College of Surgeons in 2004.
- According to data reported to the state of Wisconsin, average patient care charges at the Emergency Department at Children's Hospital are the lowest in the Milwaukee metropolitan area for pediatric patients.
- We have a nationally recognized, ACGME-accredited fellowship training program.
- Children's Hospital Outreach Program provides Emergency Department visit follow up by Emergency Department nurses to referring physicians and patients at (414) 266-6324.
- Approximately 35 percent of all Emergency Department visits by children in the Milwaukee metropolitan area are to the Emergency Department at Children's Hospital.
- In 2003, Children's Hospital implemented an in-room patient registration system, which has decreased the average length of stay in the Emergency Department by 15 minutes, or 9.3 percent.
Three Emergency Medicine specialists are listed in the 2007-2008 Best Doctors in America® database. Nationally fewer than 3 to 5 percent of all physicians are listed.
Research
- The Medical College of Wisconsin is one of 25 institutions participating in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN), the only national, federally-funded network to conduct multi-center studies of pediatric emergency care.
- Pediatric emergency medicine faculty have published more than 30 research articles in the past two years.
- More than 35 ongoing research studies are taking place, with 10-12 enrolling patients in the Emergency Department.
- Areas of special interest include asthma, outcomes of emergency care, Emergency Department utilization, violence prevention, pain management, adolescent emergencies, head trauma and pre-hospital care.
- Emergency Department physicians are investigating the use of an innovative Web-based pediatric asthma emergency department tracking system to improve physician asthma care and quality.
Emergency Medicine Team Our Emergency Medicine team consists of seventeen board-certified/board-eligible pediatric specialists, with additional training and certification in pediatric emergency medicine.
