Child Protection Center

National Children's Alliance - Accredited Member

The Child Protection Center offers services at two locations - Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and the Outpatient Health Center in downtown Milwaukee.

The Child Protection Center at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin provides comprehensive assessments of children suspected to be victims of child abuse or neglect. The goal of the center is to protect children from abuse and provide resources to help them heal.

The mission of the center is to provide leadership which enables children and families to heal the trauma of abuse and neglect and to advocate for safe and secure living environments for Wisconsin children.

To this end, the center:

  • Offers child-oriented assessments and treatment services in collaboration with other organizations serving the family.
  • Contributes to the advancement of treatment and services for abused and neglected children.
  • Inspires community leaders, law enforcement officials, health care providers and child advocates to improve the protection of children and to address barriers to service delivery.

The Child Protection Center at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin is an accredited member of the National Children's Alliance (NCA). NCA is a nationwide not-for-profit membership organization whose mission is to promote and support communities in providing a coordinated investigation and comprehensive response to victims of severe child abuse.

Medical-Forensic Abuse/Neglect Assessment
At the Child Protection Center downtown clinic, staff provides comprehensive assessments of children suspected to be victims of abuse or neglect. These services are provided in a non-invasive, child-focused atmosphere. Services offered are:

  • Medical assessment. Comprehensive evaluations are multidisciplinary by experts in the fields of medicine, nursing and social work.
  • Victim interviews. Interviews are performed by master-prepared social workers trained in the most up-to-date interviewing techniques.

Foster Care Health Screening
Foster care health screening aims to:

  • Document recent signs of abuse/neglect.
  • Ensure children receive quality, consistent and timely health evaluations.
  • Encourage and support children receiving on-going quality health care.
  • Improve the health of children in foster care.

Every child who enters a Milwaukee County foster home will receive a medical screening at the Child Protection Center.

The medical screening includes:

  • A physical exam.
  • Medical history and background check.

Child Protection Center staff will discuss the results with the child's foster parents, if available. A complete report will be mailed to the child's caseworker. Staff also will assist in making any necessary primary care, mental health or other medical follow-up appointments.

Children's Hospital Child Advocacy
The Child Advocacy program of the Children's Protection Center is located on the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center Campus. Child Advocacy staff provide multidisciplinary consultation in suspected child abuse and neglect cases that present in Children's Hospital inpatient units, Emergency Department/Trauma Center and outpatient clinics.

Child Advocacy is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. For consultation, call (414) 266-2090.

Training
The Child Protection Center sponsors a number of seminars for professionals annually. To be placed on the mailing list, call (414) 266-2090.

Child Protection Center staff also provides training to individuals and groups on a variety of topics including "Medical Assessment of Child Abuse" and "Mandated Reporter Training." Call (414) 277-8980 to discuss your training needs.

Payment
We accept most insurance plans and HMOs as well as patients on Title 19.
