Measles updates for families

There is measles in the community. It spreads easily through the air, but vaccination prevents it. Children should get measles shots at 12 months and again at age 4. If you have had two measles shots, you are immune. Most people in the area have had their shots. If you or your child has not had your shots consider getting them now.

Measles symptoms include fever, rash, cough, runny nose and red eyes. If your child has symptoms, call your doctor for instructions before visiting the hospital or clinic.

Symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Rash (descending from forehead to lower extremities)

As outbreaks of measles continue abroad, the importation of measles cases in travelers, refugees and immigrants continues to be an issue. Physicians should consider measles in persons with clinically compatible illness and a recent international travel history or recent contact with international travelers.

Immunization: Measles vaccine is highly effective in preventing disease. It's not too late to immunize! Primary care offices may see an increase in immunization appointments or requests to verify immunization records. Parents and professionals can check immunization status through the Wisconsin Immunization Registry. Access it at http://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/immunization/wir.htm.
