Amber K.
8 years old Artwork: The Fire Cracker About the artist: Amber enjoys art and uses it to express her creativity. She has a premature brother in the NICU here at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. The colors in the butterfly make it look like a firecracker. I love the way this picture looks summery. Every summer, I swim in my pool. Not this summer, though. This summer I am spending at the hospital because my baby brother is in the NICU. "Someday when he is bigger, I will teach him everything - like how to swim and make art." |

I came to Children's Hospital because I have cancer in my heart. I don't like being sick but the people here are nice to me and I like them. I love hanging out with my mom and dad. "My favorite things to see at the zoo are the seals and the birds (especially the flamingoes!) In my picture, me and my dad are walking to see the seals. When I am feeling healthy I like to do things like go to the zoo, ride my bike with my sister, go to the park, and to museums."

Karesha J. Artwork: Miserable About the artist: I've had Sickle Cell 19 years of my life. I finally got the process as to where I am able to be healed. During this process, I had to go through chemo and take pills in the morning and by night. It's hard to be in the hospital all day while 2-5 nurses and doctors poke and prod you. It gets irritating. I've been here for a month and a half and I'm at my breaking point - but to not be sick no more is the up side. "My artwork is based on my last and final stage of my transplant where I've been still here two weeks longer. They keep telling me dates when I'm getting released but then they turn around and say that the date has changed. I get myself all happy and then get my heart broke by them changing their decision. My heart will dug a deeper hole 'til I turned "miserable." Now I'm miserable to the point where I just want to keep my head buried in my pillows and want to cry sometimes. That's why this is called miserable - 'cause that is how I feel - Miserable."

Artwork: Family of Hearts About the artist: I have Spina Bifida and I come to the hospital a lot. So far, I have had more than 20 surgeries! I am a good artist and make art every Monday in class and also a lot at home. I like sculpture and painting. Painting makes me feel really good. "This picture is about a family of hearts. The biggest heart is the mom. The other hearts are the dad, the sister, and the brother. All the colors are the ways that they love each other. I love my family." |

Maddie M. Artwork: Catching Fairies About the artist: Maddie is 6 and full of spunk. She is very competitive but loves to help others. Maddie's favorite past time is art, especially painting. Maddie is a joker and loves to make people smile and laugh. She is a sister to two large blended families. Maddie has 4 older brothers, 2 older sisters and 1 younger brother. She is the spark in both families. "This is a picture I drew during my second round of Chemo for AML Leukemia. You can see my bed on one side of the picture. Hidden beneath the glitter on the other side is a group of fairies that I tried to catch while I was in my room. These fairies watched over me during this round. They were silly fairies. Sometimes I would get a fun 'spark' when I found them. Sometimes the spark made me feel bad or forget things. I finally decided that no one really catches fairies at all - but it is really fun to try."

Alexia R. Artwork: Life to Life About the artist: My favorite color is purple. My favorite food is pizza. I hate watching tv and I love painting walls. I was diagnosed with AML and that is why I am at Children's Hospital. I enjoy making art, dancing, singing, and playing instruments. I think that all the doctors and nurses are nice here so far. It's difficult being sick. Drawing with my art therapist, playing my DS, playing pranks, and joking around with staff are some things I do in the hospital to make it easier. "I was feeling a little scared about being in the hospital and decided to not focus on the scary stuff but instead make a happy image. My painting shows the life cycle of a caterpillar to a butterfly. When I made this painting I thought about the song, "Butterfly Fly Away" by Hannah Montana. It made me think about a family losing a child. It scares me to be here and sometimes I feel far away from my family. I used lots of purple because it is my favorite color and all the colors I chose were because they felt happy to me. The butterfly represents me because it has all of my favorite things: a stained glass window to look through, a pretty garden, and my favorite shape—a triangle."

Conrad About the artist: I like skateboarding, biking, and archery. I'm in 4-H. I play soccer and a little bit of tennis. I am in 5th grade and I want to see my friends when I get back. I am in the hospital because I took my skateboard ramp to the front of my house and jumped it with my bike. I got BIG AIR and my bike went one way and I went the other way. I hit my head on the sidewalk and now I have a brain injury. I was not wearing my helmet. "This is a picture of a person riding their bike on the sidewalk and going on the bike ramp. The person in the picture has a helmet on. Everybody should wear their helmets when riding bikes. I didn't have my helmet on but I WILL wear my helmet from now on!"

Madison S. About the Artist: I like to sing. I like art. And I like cats. I have a cat at my house named Tinker. I have a dog, too, named Sass. I came to Children's Hospital because I have plastic Bronchitis and I am waiting for a new heart. "In this piece, Madison played with water colors and salt to create crystals and sparkles all around her picture. She created a 'heart garden' that includes some trees, a blue and red heart, a home, a sand box, and some decorations." |
