Urea Cycle Disorder

Urea cycle disorder is a type of inborn error of metabolism.In normal protein metabolism, nitrogen waste is converted to urea. Urea is removed from the body in the urine. In urea cycle disorders, ammonia can increase to high levels. High ammonia levels can cause brain damage or even death. Treatment involves changing the diet, mainly to avoid protein. Sometimes medicine is needed to decrease ammonia levels.
