The Neuropsychology Clinic in the Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Center provides comprehensive outpatient evaluation (testing) for children with problems resulting from ADHD, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) and Asperger's syndrome, head injury, seizure disorders, developmental disabilities, neurological conditions, genetic disorders, extremely low birth weight and cerebral palsy, and cancer or other chronic physical conditions. Common referrals include:

A child who has had a recent or past brain injury from an accident, birth trauma or another neurological condition leading to difficulty with school functioning and peer development.
Diagnostic clarification around difficulty in learning, attention, behavior, or socialization impacting academic and daily functioning.
A child who is struggling with social and communication skills and/or who may be acting socially or behaviorally different.
A child who continues to struggle academically despite parent and school's best efforts.

Neuropsychological evaluations help us to better understand the child's thinking and reasoning skills, with specific emphasis on developing a strengths and weakness profile and recommendations for intervention and treatment. After the evaluation, care providers can expect:

To have a better understanding of the child's behavior and learning style, with specific insight toward the intended goal of maximizing the child's success and providing supports for areas of weakness.
The findings and recommendations to be conveyed directly to the parents/caregivers allowing them time to ask questions and understand the results.
A detailed written report with individually tailored recommendations for parents, teachers, therapists, and treating physicians.
Opportunity to have the child re-evaluated in the future should there be changes in academic, behavioral, or medical status, and to update treatment strategies and recommendations as appropriate.

The child's primary care doctor or care provider must complete a referral form and fax it to the Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Center at (414) 266-3735.

The child's parent or legal Guardian also will need to call the center's new patient intake line at (414) 266-3339 to speak to an intake coordinator and complete the referral. The child's intake information then will be reviewed by the neuropsychology team. Children who are appropriate for testing will be scheduled for the next available appointment.

For children whose insurance will not cover a neuropsychological evaluation or are determined to require a different type of service, caregivers will be contacted and provided with alternative options and referral information.
