Pediatric Translational Research Unit

New home for the TRU! Visit us on Center 4. (Directions.)

Process for submitting studies for the PTRU.

Do you have a need for nursing services, infusions or phlebotomies to help complete your study? Do you need help processing specimens? The Pediatric Translational Research Unit is available as a resource for you.

The Pediatric TRU provides nursing care for research subjects and their families. The staff provides critical care monitoring, assessments, data collection, specimen collection, handling and storage, phlebotomy, infusions and IV starts and can assist physicians with procedures. Care, from infancy through adulthood, is individualized to meet a variety of research needs.

A wide variety of studies are offered, such as data collection for genetic studies, simple phlebotomies, cardiac and respiratory monitoring of inpatient stays and infusion by a research nurse.

The Pediatric TRU supports researchers of both National Institutes of Health-funded studies and pilot studies that may lead to future NIH funding, as well as other peer-reviewed, patient-oriented research and clinical trials.

Located at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, the unit's funding comes from Children's Hospital and Health System and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute.

Request form for services.

Payment

For unfunded research, TRU provides study coordination, nursing support, space and other services at no charge for approved studies. Investigators must have funding for hospital-provided services and other research core services such as lab, x-ray, fMRI, nucleic acid extraction, etc.

For industry-funded research, all TRU services should be included in the study budget and paid for by the study sponsor. For National Institutes of Health or other externally-funded research, investigators are encouraged to include TRU services in their budgets. However, the TRU will work with investigators to waive service charges in special circumstances in order to accommodate study budgets.

Hours

General outpatient clinic hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Off-hour clinic and off-shift request needs can be accommodated by calling Laura Becker, Pediatric TRU manager, at (414) 266-3994.
