Quality Reports - Orthopedics
Clinic Volume
Why we measure it - Research shows that physicians and hospitals that treat a large number of patients tend to provide better care and have improved outcomes for treatments and procedures.

What this means - The Orthopedic Center is a large, comprehensive program that continues to serve the highest percent of outpatient clinic visits at Children's Hospital. The orthopedic team of physicians, physician's assistants and nurse practitioners collaborates to take care of patients, which allows us to be as efficient as possible.
About the data - The data reflect the number of outpatient visits captured in our registration system in years 2006-2008. In 2008, we experienced the largest growth at our Greenway location with an increased emphasis on the treatment of sports medicine injuries.

What we're doing to provide the best care:
- We have expanded our pediatric and adolescent Sports Medicine Program through the addition of a Concussion Clinic and a program director.
- We offer a second clinic location in Greenfield (Greenway Clinic), to reduce the number of trips many families need to make to our busy hospital location. Patients see the same orthopedic specialists at this location as they would at the hospital.
- The Orthopedic Center uses Lean methodology to improve clinic process and improve the overall patient and family experience within the clinic. Our Greenway Clinic location was designed using this methodology. Lean is an internationally recognized tool to enhance efficiencies and allow health care providers to focus on quality interactions with their patients.
- Both of our locations offer in-clinic radiology services, which save families from going to a separate department for X-rays.
- We provide a nurse call line where patients and families can leave their questions or concerns. An orthopedic nurse will respond within 60 minutes and is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., although messages can be left anytime. To reach our Nurse Line, call (414) 266-2411.
- Kevin Walter, MD, director of pediatric and adolescent primary care sports medicine at Children's Hospital, was selected by the The Business Journal as one of Milwaukee's "40 Under 40" in 2009.
Patients/Families:
- If you cannot keep a scheduled appointment, please call Central Scheduling at (877) 607-5280 or (414) 607-5280 as soon as possible to reschedule so another child can be seen.
- Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment so we can gather needed information from you before you see the doctor.
- Check with your insurance provider before your visit to see if a referral is needed to see a specialist at Children's Hospital.
- Come prepared with any questions or concerns you may have. We find this helps ensure the visit information meets your needs.
- Bring a full list of the medications your child is taking including over-the-counter medicines such as vitamins and supplements.
Referring physicians:
- Forward any pertinent patient documentation, including test results, to the specialty physician's office prior to the patient's visit.
If you have questions about this data or information, e-mail us or call (414) 266-6556.
