Specialty spotlight – Endocrine and Diabetes

The Endocrine and Diabetes Clinics at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin provide high-quality, comprehensive care to children with common or rare endocrine conditions. The provider team of board-certified pediatric endocrinologists and pediatric nurse practitioners is assisted by endocrine nurses, diabetes nurse educators, nutritionists and psychosocial specialists. They treat diabetes, growth disorders, thyroid problems, early or late puberty, adrenal gland problems, pituitary gland problems, calcium and bone problems, lipid disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome, menstrual disorders and disorders of sex differentiation.

The Diabetes Clinic is one of the largest in the country, providing treatment to more than 1,700 children with diabetes, both type 1 and type 2. The Endocrine Clinic sees children with disorders of growth or sexual development or problems with the adrenal, thyroid or parathyroid glands.

Recently, clinic capacity has been increased, and the time to next appointment for nonurgent new patients has been decreased. In addition, families in the Fox Valley area now have access to clinic services and providers in that region.

Nurse practitioners have developed new patient education materials and programs, such as protocols for school management of diabetes. They also are building educational guidelines and protocols to transition teens with diabetes and chronic endocrine problems to be cared for by adult medicine providers. Numerous research activities are under way related to growth disorders and diabetes.
