Quality Reports - Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Center

Survival Rates by Diagnosis

Why we measure it - Overwhelmingly, survival is the first and most important statistic parents and others ask about. We measure survival rates for inflammatory bowel disease and liver disorders and compare ourselves to the national average to make sure we are providing excellent care.

What this means - We have a 100 percent survival rate for inflammatory bowel disease and a 98.3 percent survival rate for liver disorders compared to Pediatric Hospital Information System (PHIS) peers' results of 100 percent and 99.2 percent respectively.

About the data - The data reflects the survival-to-discharge rate for diagnoses within the above disease groups at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin compared to PHIS peers. PHIS hospitals represent other leading free-standing pediatric hospitals.

What we're doing to provide the best care:

  • Our team of gastroenterologists, transplant surgeons, pediatric nurse practitioners, a registered dietitian, and dedicated transplant pharmacists provide care to liver disease and liver transplant patients before, during and after liver transplantation. This interdisciplinary team follows children closely and provides education, support and ongoing management.
  • Key members of our inflammatory bowel disease team include pediatric nurse clinicians, dietitians and psychologists who work in partnership with families to build individualized and comprehensive treatment plans to optimize care.
  • The program provides nutritional assessment and management to maximize growth and development and minimize long-term complications such as osteoporosis.
  • Our specialists conduct cutting-edge research to provide patients with access to the newest therapies. Genetic research also is helping predict treatment outcomes.
  • A highly specialized Children's Transport Team is available 24 hours a day to stabilize and transport seriously sick and injured infants, children and adolescents to our center. More than 1,500 transports are provided each year.

  • Please work with your child's referring physician and insurance company to determine if a referral or authorization is required for the visit.

Patient Impact

Shortly after birth, Corrina's pediatrician referred her to Children's Hospital after routine lab work showed that bile wasn't draining from her liver. Our specialists diagnosed her with biliary atresia, a condition in which bile ducts are blocked. To correct the condition, doctors operated on Corrina at just 11 weeks old. Today, a happier, healthier Corrina (shown here at 10 months of age) meets with her team of doctors once a month to monitor her condition.
