Patient and Family Experience
Why we measure it - For us to understand how we are doing, we ask our patients and families to tell us about their overall care experience. Our goal is for everyone to have the best possible experience with us, so we use only "excellent" responses to track our progress. We also know that patients/families who rates their care as "excellent" will most likely refer others to our care.
What this means - The percent of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit families that rate their care as "excellent" has consistently exceeded the hospital goal.
About the data - Children's Hospital of Wisconsin uses a third-party vendor to survey patients and families and obtain feedback about their overall experience. This data reflects the percentage of patients and families that had a visit to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and responded "excellent" to the survey question, "Overall how would you rate the care you received at this visit?" The response options are: excellent, very good, good, fair and poor.

What we're doing to provide the best care:
- We offer sleeping accommodations for parents in one of our sleeping rooms adjacent to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or at the Ronald McDonald House across the street from Children's Hospital, as space allows.
- We encourage family participation and allow parents to visit 24 hours a day.
- Children's Hospital has four lactation consultants who are registered nurses and highly trained to help mothers and babies overcome feeding difficulties, even when infants have diagnoses that make breastfeeding difficult.
- Children's Hospital has the only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the state to host the March of Dimes Family Support Program, which provides information and comfort to families of premature and other critically ill newborns. It addresses the needs of patients and families throughout the newborn's hospitalization, transition home and in the event of an infant's death.
- The Daniel M. Soref Family Resource Center, located at Children's Hospital, offers parent-to-parent support, information, referrals and connecting to community resources including support groups and funding options.
- The Palliative Care Program at Children's Hospital is one of the nation's leaders in providing state-of-the-art treatment for children with complex or life-threatening conditions and their families.
- We regularly survey our patients and encourage them to share their opinions and suggestions.
- We review and implement changes based on patient satisfaction feedback.
