About us

The disciplines of pharmacology and toxicology have evolved dramatically within the last 15 years in large part because of recent progress in genetics, the availability of advanced molecular tools and improved analytical chemistry techniques. Despite these advances, birth defects remain the leading cause of mortality in early childhood with the cause unknown in about 80 percent of cases. In the area of pharmaceuticals, three-quarters of all medications marketed today do not carry Food and Drug Administration approved labeling for use in neonates, infants, children and/or adolescents. An urgent need exists for expanding our fundamental knowledge of developmental toxicology and pharmacology and integrating this knowledge into risk assessment, risk management and therapeutic practice for children. In light of these needs, the goals of the research in Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacogenetics and Teratology are to:

  1. Expand basic knowledge regarding developmental clinical pharmacology and toxicology.
  2. Effectively translate advances in the basic sciences to applied clinical medicine, particularly in the area of pharmacogenetics and toxicogenetics.
  3. Encourage the training of physicians and scientists to better understand inter-individual and developmental variation in human response to drugs and toxicants.
