Exceptional services and outcomes

  • Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, BloodCenter of Wisconsin and the Medical College of Wisconsin collaborate to provide cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment services.
  • The center uses an interdisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment, involving multiple physician specialties, as well as dedicated staff in nursing, social work, psychology, physical therapy and genetics. Patients have easy access to physician consultations from any of the hospital's pediatric subspecialties including cardiology, dermatology, nephrology, infectious disease and surgery.
  • Children's Hospital has one of the most experienced and successful pediatric oncology and blood and marrow transplant programs in the country.
  • National protocols for acute lymphocytic leukemia originated as pilot studies at Children's Hospital.
  • Program physicians were the first to discover the use of high doses of methotrexate for the treatment of ALL in children, a method that is used to combat the rapidly dividing cells. This treatment now is used at cancer centers nationwide.
  • Program physicians have extensive experience with matched sibling and alternative donor transplants.
  • Physicians' experience, coupled with the comprehensive team approach, led to one of the best survival rates for patients who received unrelated donor transplants from 1997 to 2002, according to the National Marrow Donor Program. Children's Hospital exceeded the predicted one-year survival rate.
  • The program boasts world-recognized expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of aplastic anemia.
  • The Children's Hospital Primary Immunodeficiency Program and the Wisconsin State Hygiene Lab are pioneering the nation by making Wisconsin the first state to pilot a newborn screening test for SCID, a disease typically fatal if not diagnosed and treated early.

  • All private patient rooms feature standardized equipment to enhance infection control and to accommodate centralized patient monitoring.
  • An independent HEPA filtration system is in place for infection control.
  • Each inpatient room contains a patient family desk with wireless Internet access and accommodations for two parents to stay overnight.
  • A badge controlled unit allows guests to be monitored for the safety of children as well as for infection control.
  • A PlayStation is located in every inpatient room.
  • Large family lounges with computers for family use and space for patient activities are available.
  • Dedicated Child Life specialists provide support.
  • The Family Accommodations Program makes it easier for families to travel from out of town.
