Overview of Telemedicine Program

Children's Hospital of Wisconsin's telemedicine program makes world-class specialized care available to families close to home.

The program uses teleconferencing technology to connect patients outside of Southeast Wisconsin to pediatric specialists at Children's Hospital in Milwaukee.

First, a specially trained nurse coordinator meets with the patient's family to complete an assessment. Then, the nurse makes an audio and video connection with the Milwaukee hospital. During the session, the patient, parents and physician can see and hear each other. They can ask and answer questions as well as discuss concerns and treatment options. Photographs also can be taken for closer examination.

The use of telemedicine is well documented in radiology, cardiology, psychiatry and dermatology. It is being used across the U.S. and the world to bring specialty care to communities that may not otherwise have these resources. It also has been used for many years by the U.S. military.
