Translational Research Programs

Based on the concept of translational research, Children's Research Institute is designed to take clinical problems from patients' bedsides to study in the laboratory. Laboratory discoveries are then converted into new treatments, preventions, therapies and cures for patients.
Children's Research Institute focuses on eight basic themes that promise to improve the health of children as dramatically as the discovery of antibiotics did a century ago. These eight themes were developed to focus the research on high impact areas that not only addressed the major causes of childhood morbidity and mortality, but also realistically evaluated the areas of translational research where:
- A critical mass of pediatric research excellence already existed.
- Opportunities for local collaboration with academic partners and industry could positively leverage research return on investment.
- Translational research could build upon the successful clinical programs established at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.
Each theme is a broad area of study, and each has the potential to address issues related to dozens of pediatric health problems. Each program has a critical and integral role in the present and future development of interdisciplinary translational research at Children's Research Institute that is focused on important pediatric health problems.
