What is the Young Adult Oncology Group?
We are a group of young adult survivors who have received or currently are receiving cancer treatment. Our mission is to provide survivorship support, education and resources for young adult cancer survivors in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
What does the group do?
The group gets together on a monthly basis to share experiences and plan social, recreational and other gatherings to form a community of young adults who have been impacted by cancer. Past activities have included sporting events, theater outings and theme parks. In addition to these events, we also plan educational events with guest speakers who discuss topics of interest to cancer survivors.
Some members of the oncology group also participate in a mentoring program. This program pairs a young adult with someone who currently is dealing with cancer to provide peer support, advice and comfort under the supervision of qualified staff.
Who can participate?
This group is open to anyone who is:
- Between 18 and 30 years of age.
- On or off cancer treatment.
- Interested in becoming part of a community that encourages empowerment through education and support.
We welcome all young adults, regardless of where they are or were being treated. Participants also can bring a guest.
When does the group meet?
Group meetings are held the second Tuesday of most months from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. In these meetings, we share experiences, as well as plan ongoing and future events. Social events typically alternate with meeting months.
