Shelly Malin, PhD, RN
Associate Director, Children's Research Institute and Director, Advanced Practice Nursing and Research Department
Shelly Malin, PhD, RN was named director of Nursing Research in 2005. Malin also is the Director of Advanced Practice Nursing, and a clinical associate professor at Marquette University-College of Nursing. Malin earned her BSN from the University of Wisconsin-Madision in 1974, her MSN in pediatrics from Marquette University in 1983 and her PhD in nursing in 1994 from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Malin began her nursing career at the University Center for Health Sciences-University Hospital in Madison, Wis. She moved to Milwaukee in 1977. She held various positions at St. Michael's Hospital, including Director of Nursing, Clinical Nurse Specialist Group Coordinator, Assistant Vice President for Nursing Operations and Service Director of Specialty Practice, Quality Assurance and Research. Malin's academic career began at Marquette University in 1989, where she was an assistant professor in Pediatrics and Administration. She was appointed Graduate Option Coordinator for Pediatrics in 1995 and Director of Continuing Nursing Education in 1997. She has been a clinical associate professor at Marquette since 2003, and in this capacity teaches graduate programs in pediatrics and health care systems leadership.
Malin was a Federal Traineeship Grant Recipient in 1980, and a fellow in the LINE (Leadership in Nursing Education) program in 2001, funded by the Fuld Foundation.
She has authored numerous articles in the areas of nursing interventions and outcomes, coping with hospitalization and illness, obesity prevention and leadership development. Her current scholarly interests include translational research, nursing intervention, research and evidence-based nursing practice.
