Volunteer Respite Care

Respite Care is the temporary care of a child with special needs so that parents or other caregivers can have a needed break. Individualized care is given on an ongoing basis by a volunteer provider in the child's home, in the home of the respite care provider or on outings in the community. The children in this program range in age from infants to 18-year-olds. They may have developmental delays, physical challenges or emotional and/or behavioral issues.

The benefits of respite care are many. For parents, respite care offers a break from taking care of a child with special needs, knowing that a competent provider is caring for their child. For the child, respite care offers companionship and sharing of new experiences with another individual or family on an ongoing basis. For the provider, respite care offers a chance to help a family in need of relief and build a new relationship with a child.

Respite care volunteers provide at least six hours of care each month at mutually agreed upon times. The volunteer participates in an introductory meeting with the family, the child and the Respite Care Coordinator. Through this meeting, the volunteer will develop an understanding of the child's needs and then receive training from the family to meet those needs. The volunteer will work with the family to ensure that the best quality of care is being provided for the child.

Respite care is different from other child care in that it is provided regularly, not only on an "as needed" basis. Providers establish a relationship with the child and become a support system for the family.

One day volunteer opportunities, Saturday respite events

Saturday respite events allow busy individuals to volunteer to provide much needed respite to a family without making a commitment to our regular Volunteer Respite Care Program. You will be matched with a child with special needs to enjoy crafts, games, movies, gym time and more.

These fun and rewarding events are held quarterly at different locations throughout the Milwaukee metro area. Lunch and snacks are provided. Nursing staff is available for any personal or medical care the children may need.

In addition to impacting the life of a child, you will help strengthen the child's family by providing his or her parents with a much needed break. When parents can count on a break from caring for their child with special needs, they often feel better equipped to handle the everyday challenges and stress of parenting.

For more information or to volunteer at a Saturday respite event in Milwaukee, contact the respite care coordinator at (414) 453-1400.
