Preparing children for the hospital
Our staff provides family-centered care. We listen carefully to each patient's family because we believe parents know their child best. The staff of Children's Hospital of Wisconsin encourages family members to be involved in their child's care decisions. Everything we do shows our passion for children:

  • Our staff is specially trained and experienced in treating children of all ages –  from newborns to teens.
  • More than 75 percent of our primary nurses are certified pediatric nurses.
  • Our pediatricians are on site 24/7.
  • We offer space for parents to sleep and shower so they can stay close to their children.
  • We offer Child Life specialists who help children cope with their hospital stay and procedures through play, preparation, teaching and support.
  • Our playroom has toys, movies, video games and books to help children during their hospital stay.
  • When possible, we will do procedures in a special treatment room so that your child feels safe in his or her room.
  • Social Work staff provide families with additional support and resources.
  • Pediatric specialists from Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee are readily available for consult. Children's is ranked among the best pediatric hospitals in the nation.

Dear Parent,

Because Children's Hospital of Wisconsin places safety first, the Fox Valley Pediatric Unit will restrict visiting until the peak flu season ends, usually in the spring. During this time, the following people may visit the Pediatric Unit:

  • Parents.
  • Four other adults ages 18 and older.
  • Brothers and sisters of the patient-visits are limited to 30 minutes each day unless other arrangements are approved by your nurse.

Visitors who have cold or flu symptoms will not be allowed on the unit. If the parents of the patient have these symptoms, they will be asked to wear a mask while visiting.

You can help keep your child safe by making sure no one who is sick visits your child. If you feel sick, you should stay home too. If you must visit the hospital while sick, wear a mask and wash your hands before touching your child.

If you have questions about restricted visiting, contact your child's nurse or doctor.
