Faculty Orientation Materials
Thank you for your interest in the nursing student placement program at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. As a teaching hospital we are committed to provide quality learning experiences for all nursing students. These Web pages will provide details and information about our nursing student placement program.
Undergraduate Experiences
Instructor-led clinical groups This traditional learning experience involves an instructor bringing a group of students, 8 or fewer, to a clinical unit in the hospital for learning. Requests for this type of learning must be submitted by the School of Nursing using the Nursing Student Request form for clinical groups. Deadline for submission of requests for group placements are:
- Fall requests (for experiences occurring between Aug. 15 and Dec. 31) must be submitted by April 15.
- Spring requests (for experiences occurring between Jan. 1 and May 15) must be submitted by Oct. 15.
- Summer requests (for experiences occurring between May 15 and Aug. 15) must be submitted by March 15.
Alternative learning experiences This option allows a student already participating in a clinical group at Children's Hospital to have an experience on another unit or department. In most areas these are limited to 4 hours. Students requesting NICU or PICU must have a strong interest in the intensive care area and should have already attended one of the This is MY Children's Career educational days. All requests must be submitted by an instructor, using the Alternative Learning Experience Request Form.
Refer to the listing of alternative experiences. Students are expected to come ready to actively engage in the alternative learning experience by establishing clear objectives and preparing before coming. Please have the student bring their completed Alternative Student Objectives and Evaluation Form to the site. A two-week lead time for requests is highly recommended. Faculty are encouraged to spread requests out throughout the time period students are at Children's Hospital. Units/departments often are not able to accommodate multiple requests at the end of a quarter/semester.
Preceptorships This experience is reserved for students in their senior capstone/synthesis or last semester in an associate degree program. This is a one-on-one learning experience with a registered nurse in the student's area of interest. There are a limited number of precepted learning experiences available in any given time period. Faculty must submit requests using the Nursing Student Placement Request Form for precepted students. Deadline for submission of requests for preceptorships are:
- Fall requests (for experiences occurring between Aug. 15 and Dec. 31) must be submitted by June 15.
- Spring requests (for experiences occurring between Jan. 1 and May 15) must be submitted by Nov. 1.
- Summer requests (for experiences occurring between May 15 and Aug. 15) must be submitted by April 1.
Graduate Experiences
Graduate students in pediatrics, family practice, education and administration come to Children's Hospital for clinical learning experiences. All graduate students are linked with a specific, primary preceptor who will help coordinate their learning at the hospital.
Preceptorships All requests must be made by a faculty member. Requests will not be accepted from students. Placements are made for one semester at a time. Requests for year-long preceptorships will not be honored. Nursing Student Placement Request Form. Deadlines are the same as for undergrad preceptorships listed above.
