The pediatric specialists in the pain program at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin work as a team to approach the unique issues of children's pain. This team, made up of pediatric anesthesiologists and related health professionals, find age-appropriate solutions that work, even for the most painful conditions. Team members are available for inpatient or outpatient consultation.

Inpatient services
The Acute Pain Service works with children who are inpatients and experiencing pain for a variety of reasons, such as surgery, injury, cancer, sickle cell anemia and headaches. Throughout a child's stay at the hospital, his or her pain is continually assessed and treated accordingly through medication or other methods like deep breathing, relaxation, guided imagery and massages. Patients benefit both from the latest medical approaches as well as proven, effective alternative therapies.

Inpatient service is available for many conditions, including:

  • Postoperative pain.
  • Cystic fibrosis.
  • Sickle cell anemia.
  • Malignancies.
  • Trauma.
  • Life-threatening illnesses.
  • Headaches.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Musculoskeletal pain.

Outpatient services
Children with chronic or long-standing pain are seen as outpatients in the Chronic Pain Clinic of the Jane B. Pettit Pain Management Center. Clinic staff work together to help children with painful illnesses or conditions find answers where at first there appeared to be none. Pain cannot always be eliminated, but oftentimes can be reduced to tolerable levels, greatly enhancing quality of life.

Areas of expertise include:

  • Cancer pain.
  • Sickle cell anemia.
  • Fibromyalgia.
  • Complex regional pain syndromes, such as reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD).
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Headaches.
  • Fractures, whiplash.
