HIV Program
The HIV program started at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in 1992, serving about 30 children with HIV from the Milwaukee area. A community-based program, it was one of the first of its kind in the United States. Today our program serves more than 900 children statewide.
The HIV Program at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin welcomes children, adolescents, women and their families. Because of the prevention and education efforts of our staff, only two babies have been born in Wisconsin with HIV since January 1998.
We offer:
- Education to OB/GYN offices, hospitals that take care of pregnant women, pediatricians, and community-based organizations such as day cares and schools to help them understand HIV and its treatment.
- An intensive case management program for children and adolescents throughout the state including drug therapy assistance.
- An intensive case management program for women in Milwaukee in collaboration with the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Milwaukee Health Department.
- Psycho-social programs for children, adolescents and women with HIV and their family members.
- Education to home health care agencies to help them become comfortable and skilled in taking care of children with HIV.
In addition, the Children's Hospital HIV program partners with the Aids Resource Center of Wisconsin (ARCW) to implement different research studies.

What happens at a visit? Since the HIV Program is a community-based program, children with HIV only visit the clinic twice a year. The typical patient averages six contacts a week from a member of the HIV Program staff. These include patients or families calling to ask questions, nurses or providers in the community calling or social workers checking on a family. |
