Overview of Kidney Transplant Program
Since 1986 Children's Hospital of Wisconsin has been offering new hope for children with chronic kidney failure through the Kidney Transplant Program. Children's Hospital cares for the majority of Wisconsin kids with transplant-related kidney disease, with 403 patients over the past 5 years.
An indicator of quality of life for our patients, it is gratifying to know that more than 80 percent of patients return to school within one year of transplant.
Experience Our pediatric kidney transplant team has extensive experience in treating the most difficult cases. The collective experience of our highly skilled kidney transplant specialists include more than 2,500 transplants performed on adult and pediatric patients (105). They are nationally recognized as experts in:
- Immunosuppression protocols
- Recurrence of diseases
Our transplant specialists perform:
- Transplants from living donors who are relatives of the child.
- Transplants from non-relatives
- Transplants from non-living donors.
A Team Approach Kidney transplant care for children is delivered by a multidisciplinary team including:
- Nephrologists (ESRD trained)
- Pediatric Transplant Coordinator
- Renal Clinic RN, Dialysis RN
- Dietitians
- Psychologists, social workers and Child Life specialists
The team is dedicated to ensuring open lines of communication as well as consistent and compassionate care. The kidney transplant team at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin takes pride in its specialized services to patients and their families.

Renal Care
Children's Hospital of Wisconsin has a longstanding regional reputation for innovation and expertise in comprehensive renal care. Home to the state's only dedicated pediatric dialysis unit, the Renal Program at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin provides a comprehensive continuum of services including:
A full range of dialysis services including:
- Home peritoneal dialysis
- In-center chronic dialysis
- Acute peritoneal/hemodialysis
- Prenatal counseling for kidney abnormalities diagnosed by prenatal ultrasound such as hydronephrosis and cystic kidneys.
- Medical management of congenital conditions such as kidney duplication, solitary kidney, cystic kidney, vesicoureteral reflux, and posterior urethral valves.
- Coordinated care of kidney disease related to other conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus, diabetes, and congenital kidney disease
