Since July 2004, the Child Advocacy Center has identified and cared for children and adolescents in northeastern Wisconsin who are suspected victims of abuse or neglect. The center offers a non-threatening, nurturing environment and state-of-the-art technologies that provide legal documentation of incidents for use by law enforcement and the judicial system. The center utilizes a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach to investigating and providing services to families with child abuse or neglect concerns. The Fox Valley team includes representatives from law enforcement, prosecution, child protective services, medical, victim advocacy and counseling agencies.
Overview of services
- Child abuse assessment - The assessment process includes a complete medical examination and an interview by a trained social worker adept at working with traumatized children. All work is carefully documented on videotape or DVD to meet judicial standards, so that if an arrest is made, the child may be spared having to testify in court.
- Referral - Following assessment, suspected victims of abuse will be referred by center staff members to psychological counselors, family counselors, medical care and psychiatric and developmental rehabilitation specialists in their home communities who can aid in their recovery.
- Professional and community education - The center will provide ongoing training to law enforcement officers, social workers, physicians, nurses and other professionals in northeastern Wisconsin, and facilitate the sharing of research in investigative techniques.
- Foster care health checks - A complete physical will be provided for all children entering a foster-care environment.
