Overview Pediatric Rheumatology, established in 1979, provides comprehensive, coordinated care to children with arthritis and rheumatic diseases including juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), dermatomyositis, scleroderma, rheumatic fever, Raynaud's and various vasculitic syndromes. Diagnostic evaluations of children with musculoskeletal pain and symptoms of inflammation also are provided.
Multidisciplinary health care is provided to meet the diverse clinical needs of our patients. Our team of specialized professionals participate in clinical trials of new therapies designed for pediatric rheumatic diseases. Our specialists also are members of national clinical research consortiums initiated to study pediatric rheumatic disease in a collaborative fashion.

- Our rheumatology team provides care related solely to the child's rheumatic disease so children seen in our clinic continue to see their primary care providers.

Research
- A strong basic science research effort focused on studying the development and regulation of the T-cells that are involved in autoimmune diseases such as arthritis and lupus.
- Calvin Williams, MD, is a principal investigator on grants from the National Institutes of Health designed to study T-cell development and regulation.
- James Nocton, MD, is a collaborating principal investigator on a multicenter trial studying the genetics of pediatric-onset SLE.
- Judyann Olson, MD, is a collaborating principal investigator on a multicenter trial studying gene expression profiles in pediatric arthritis and lupus.
- James Verbsky, MD, PhD, studies how certain cells of the immune system prevent immune medicated diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
- Clinical trials for JRA and lupus are ongoing. Efficacy and safety studies in biologic response modifier medications in JRA. We also participate in outcomes studies.
Pediatric Rheumatology Team Pediatric Rheumatology consists of board-certified or board-eligible physicians and pediatric nurse practitioners.
