Overview

The mission of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Center at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin is to provide excellent mental health care for children, adolescents and families in the region. This is accomplished through diagnosis and treatment, advocacy, research and education. The center's staff is committed to improving mental health outcomes through multidisciplinary, culturally-competent and timely service to children, adolescents and families.

 

Subspecialty Clinic Options

  • Animal-assisted therapy uses a dog in therapy, which helps the child engage, decrease anxiety, develop compatibility, increase responsibility and increase motivation for treatment.
  • Bipolar and psychotic disorders clinic provides diagnostic evaluations for children who are showing symptoms of severe mood or thought disorders.
  • Consultation and liaison service offers a biopsychosocial treatment approach to address the mental health needs of children with acute and chronic medical conditions through psychiatric and psychological consultation throughout the hospital and its subspecialty clinics such as HIV, Diabetes, Child Protection and Gastroenterology, including the Feeding and Swallowing Program and the NEW (Nutrition, Exercise and Weight Management) Kids™ Program.
  • Evaluation clinic provides diagnoses and easy-to-implement treatment recommendations for patients with suspected ADHD, depression or anxiety.
  • Group therapy provides group psychotherapeutic treatment by psychotherapy staff at the center. Groups addressing specific concerns by age/gender are offered, including socialization skills, ADHD education and trauma support. 
  • Individual therapy and family therapy provides psychotherapeutic treatment by psychotherapy staff.
  • Medication management provides psychiatric evaluation and management of psychopharmacological medication.
  • Psychological/neuropsychological testing provides comprehensive evaluation by psychologists or neuropsychologists.
  • Second opinion clinic provides diagnostic review and/or medication evaluation on referral from the child's current clinician. 
  • Temper tantrum clinic provides assessment and treatment of excessive temper tantrums in children 2-5 years old.
  • Trauma clinic provides treatment of traumatized children, particularly those who have been abused and/or neglected.
  •  Locations include the main clinic at Children's Hospital and a second clinic at 1020 N. 12th St., Milwaukee, Wis.

Research

  • Multiple pediatric psychopharmacology trials are ongoing and actively recruiting children and adolescents with bipolar disorder, depressive disorders, autistic disorder, ADHD and schizophrenia.
  • Additional projects include those investigating pharmacogenetics, neuropsychology, neuroimaging and therapeutic interventions, including in the areas of feeding disorders, childhood overweight and diabetes.

Psychiatry Team
The psychiatry and behavioral medicine team consists of health professionals who treat the entire range of childhood mental illness. We have expertise in the areas of attachment disorders, mood disorders, ADHD, feeding disorders, psychosocial issues related to chronic illness, neuropsychological assessment, psychopharmacology, child abuse and neglect, and behavioral disorders of childhood.
