Overview Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation helps children and families challenged by congenital and acquired disabilities. The service focuses on helping to prevent and manage the consequences of disabling disorders and provide comprehensive long-term care for those with special health care needs.
Specialty Highlights
- Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation services are available for children with cerebral palsy, brain injury, strokes, encephalitis/meningitis, brain tumors, rheumatic, respiratory and cardiac diseases, genetic disorders, developmental delay, orthopedic and nonsurgrical sports injuries, multiple trauma and burns, neuromuscular diseases, brachial plexus injuries, torticollis, spina bifida and spinal cored injuries, spasticity and other congenital and acquired disabling disorders of childhood.
- Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation helps care for children in the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin intensive care units, other inpatient units and outpatient clinics by:
- Addressing and managing medical issues related to a wide variety of disabling disorders of childhood.
- Managing spasticity related to brain injury, cerebral palsy and spinal cord injury with oral medications, botulinum toxin and phenol injections and intrathecal baclofen pumps.
- Co-managing children's feeding and nutrition issues with gastroenterologists.
- Providing anticipatory guidance for the long-term needs of children with special health care needs.
- Prescribing and directing physical, occupational and speech therapies.
- Prescribing braces and orthotics, wheelchairs and other medical equipment
- Children's Hospital of Wisconsin clinics that include physical medicine and rehabilitiation are:

- Seating and Equipment Clinic.
- Feeding Clinic.
- Saliva Management Clinic.

- Neuromuscular Disease Clinic.
- Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation directs the Children's Hospital Tone Management and Mobility Program. This program includes a cohesive team of professionals that provides comprehensive orthopedic, neurosurgical and therapy care and services for children that have significant tone and spasticity.
