Overview Children's Specialty Group has the largest group of fellowship-trained pediatric otolaryngologists in Wisconsin and provides specialized medical and surgical care to children in the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Our physicians have a level of expertise that is unmatched in terms of clinical skills, innovation, cutting edge technology and research by any group of otolaryngologists in the region and provide a full range of pediatric otolaryngology services at Children's Hospital.

Multidisciplinary collaboration with Pediatric Gastroenterology and Speech Pathology to develop a nationally recognized program of excellence providing comprehensive evaluation and treatment of children with complex swallowing disorders. This includes Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing and Sensory Testing (FEESST).

Helped develop one of the nation's first clinics specifically designed to diagnose and treat voice disorders in pediatric patients. This clinic provides comprehensive evaluation including videostroboscopy, specialized speech therapy interventions and a multimodality therapy for the treatment of children with a variety of voice disorders.

P. Ashley Wackym, MD, leads the Cochlear Implantation Program at Children's Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin, which has developed national prominence and is one of the largest in the Midwest. Additional otologic expertise includes cholesteatoma surgery, osseointegrated implants for hearing restoration and facial reconstruction, and surgical correction for congenital ear abnormalities.

Multidisciplinary collaboration with Plastic Surgery and Dermatology to provide management of complex pediatric vascular malformations, making the clinic at Children's Hospital the only such clinic in Wisconsin.
Research
- Joseph Kerschner, MD, is one of only a few clinician scientists in the nation to have his otitis media research work recognized and funded by National Institutes of Health.
- Dr. Wackym and Jill Firszt, PhD, lead nationally recognized and American Hearing Research Foundation funded pediatric cochlear implant research.
- Dr. Kerschner received IRB approval to conduct a Phase III FDA trial using the sclerosing agent Picibanil to treat lymphangiomas, allowing Children's Hospital to be the only institution in the region to offer this promising new therapy.
Otolaryngology Team The Otolaryngology team consists of three fellowship-trained pediatric otolaryngologists, one fellowship-trained neurotologist, three general otolaryngologists with special interest in treating children, two nurse practitioners as well as a group of highly trained audiologists, speech pathologists and nurses. Programs focus on otitis media, congenital hearing loss and other complex ear abnormalities, pediatric airway difficulties and laryngotracheal reconstruction, pediatric head and neck neoplasms and congenital malformations, pediatric voice and swallowing disorders and disorders of the nose and sinuses.
