Orthopedic Surgery (414) 337-7300
Overview Orthopedic Surgery offers a wide range of experience and provides state-of-the-art treatment for children, including the diagnosis and treatment of problems related to bones, joints and muscles. We are extensively involved in clinical studies analyzing the results of treatment and multiple modalities of basic science research.
Specialty Highlights
-
Orthopedic Surgery encountered nearly 20,000 orthopedic cases in 2005. In addition, more than 1,500 orthopedic surgeries were performed, ranging from sports medicine issues to orthopedic oncology, spinal fusion and trauma.

-
Children's Hospital is the only pediatric center in the country to use Quantec spinal analysis for 3-D measurement of the scoliotic spine, a system that utilizes light rather than radiation.

Club foot is treated using the Ponseti technique, resulting in a marked decrease in the extent of surgery required.
-
Gait tests are done with state-of-the-art motion analysis equipment, including the E-med and Pedar systems.
Roger Lyon, MD, and Jeffrey Schwarb, MD, are listed in the 2007-2008 Best Doctors in America® database. The 40,000 U.S. physicians who make the list represent the top 3 to 5 percent of the nation's practicing board-certified physicians.
Research

- Ongoing studies to assess the ideal type of intervention for patients with neuromuscular disorders in order to improve their gate.
- Basic science studies have developed a new foot motion analysis system, which will be one of the first systems in the country to assess the function of the foot during gait.
- The use of ultrasound and its effect on both growth and fracture healing.
- Beginning stages of a study regarding a system to stabilize the scoliotic spine without performing a fusion.
