Overview The Pediatric Nephrology team provides comprehensive medical care to infants, children and adolescents with kidney disease, hypertension and urinary incontinence. Physicians, nurses, a dietitian and a social worker from Children's Hospital of Wisconsin are available to help patients and their families understand and care for their kidney problems. Physicians are board-certified pediatric nephrologists with expertise in both general nephrology and end-stage renal disease care. The Nephrology team provides services including diagnosis and treatment of congenital urinary tract anomalies, hypertension, nephrotic syndrome, glomerulonephritis, hemolytic uremic syndrome, acute and chronic renal failure, kidney transplant, prenatal abnormalities, metabolic bone disorders and urinary abnormalities.

- The Voiding Improvement Program (VIP) is a unique program that provides a sensitive approach to children with common voiding disorders including enuresis and daytime incontinence.
- Prenatal counseling is provided for parents whose infants have kidney abnormalities such as hydronephrosis and cystic kidneys when diagnosed by prenatal ultrasound.
- Children's Hospital of Wisconsin has the only pediatric dialysis unit in Wisconsin which is staffed by pediatric nurses, a renal dietitian and social worker. The in-center hemodialysis is child-friendly, with programs that enhance adjustment and promote rehabilitation.
- The Pediatric Kidney Transplant program at Children's Hospital has been active since 1987, providing transplants in children between the ages of 1 to 18 years. The multidisciplinary kidney transplant team provides long-term, family-centered care to patients who have undergone a kidney transplant. Patient outcomes meet and exceeded national standards.
- Medical management of congenital conditions such as kidney duplication, solitary kidney, cystic kidney, vesicoureteral reflux and posterior urethral valves is coordinated with pediatric urology for patients who require surgical management to correct their urinary tract abnormality.
Research
- Scott Van Why, MD, is active in research of pathogenesis of acute renal failure and has presented his work nationally on the mechanisms of recovery from ischemic kidney injury.
- Cynthia Pan, MD, is the local lead investigator in a multicenter study examining the effects of an immunosupressant medication in IgA nephropathy and is serving on the scientific committee for the Midwest Pediatric Nephrology Consortium, a multicenter study group designed to address pediatric kidney diseases.
- Ellis Avner, MD, is the director of Children's Research Institute, and is known nationally for his scientific investigation into the pathophysiology of polycystic kidney disease.
