Overview

Neonatologists provide comprehensive care for critically ill newborn infants and their families. A multidisciplinary team at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin includes subspecialty-trained physicians, neonatal nurses, a clinical nurse specialist, neonatal nurse practitioners and other allied health professionals to provide high quality care.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Children's Hospital is a state-of-the-art, 41-bed unit. The designated level III unit can handle the most complex medical problems that occur in newborns. The NICU design includes features such as private bed spaces to increase family privacy, two parenting rooms for independent care by parents prior to their baby's discharge, an in-unit pharmacy staffed by pharmacists who are specially trained in the unique needs of NICU babies and two breast pump rooms. Over 600 infants with various health problems are cared for in this unit each year.

Specialty Highlights

  • Along with the vast array of subspecialty physicians and programs at Children's Hospital, we offer the only quarternary care service for neonates in Wisconsin.
  • The location of the Froedtert & Medical College Birth Center within the Children's Hospital building allows our neonatologists to provide immediate care at the time of delivery to high-risk newborns.
  • Outcomes for many life threatening congenital anomalies treated in our NICU are among the best in the world.
  • The Fetal Concerns Program combines the resources of the Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin Birth Center with Children's Hospital to provide a complete range of care and consultation for women whose pregnancies are complicated by concerns of fetal abnormalities. It is the only program of its type in Wisconsin.

  • Neonatology is one of only two groups in Wisconsin offering fellowship training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.
  • Five of our Neoatologist are listed in the 2007-2008 Best Doctors in America® database. The 40,000 U.S. physicians who make the list represent the top 3 to 5 percent of the nation's practicing board-certified physicians.

Research

  • Funding for research projects within Neonatology at the Medical College of Wisconsin exceeds annually $1 million.
  • NIH-funded basic science research and clinical trials investigating the causes and treatment for pulmonary hypertension in the newborn.
  • Neonatology received the National Children's Study Grant for Waukesha County as one of the six vanguard sites in the country by NIH.
  • As a member of the Vermont Oxford Neonatal Network, Children's Hospital participates in multicentered clinical trials sponsored by the network to improve the outcomes of neonates.
  • The Children's Hospital Birth Defects Research Center is co-directed by a neonatologist and conducts research on the risk factors and mechanisms of birth defects.
  • Epidemiologic studies on the incidence of RSV in premature infants.
  • The role of toll-like receptors in the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
  • The impact of early neurological injury on the neuropsychological functioning of the developing child.
  • Methods to decrease the incidence of central line infection in critically ill neonates.
