Overview

Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition provides comprehensive expert care for children with diverse disorders involving the digestive tract and liver. Our specialists strive to provide excellent consultative tertiary pediatric gastroenterology care for children in southeastern Wisconsin, the Fox Valley, Green Bay and northern Illinois. In addition to those primary service areas, we are a national and international referral source for children with feeding disorders, gastrointestinal motility disorders, inflammatory bowel disease and cyclic vomiting syndrome. Staff contributes to the education of health care professionals through our gastroenterology fellowship program, participation in nursing and resident rotations and serving as a resource to the community in the management of these children.

Specialty Highlights

  • Pediatric Gastroenterology is led by Colin Rudolph, MD, PhD, a recognized leader in pediatric gastroenterology and editor of Rudolph's Pediatrics, 21st Edition textbook.
  • Steven Werlin, MD, is an internationally recognized expert in the management of pediatric pancreatic disease.
  • B Li, MD, is an international, recognized expert in the management of cyclic vomiting syndrome.
  • Subra D. Kugahasan, MD, is an internationally recognized expert in the management of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease.
  • The Mechanic Sclossman Celiac Disease Clinic uses a team approach for diagnosing, educating children and their families and managing the long-term follow-up care of children with Celiac Disease.
  • The Constipation and Reflux Evaluation Program is staffed by a team of pediatric nurse practitioners in collaboration with gastroenterologists. Care is provided through behavior modification, dietary consulting and medication.
  • The Liver Transplant Program follows patients before and after transplant. Liver transplant may be necessary for a treatment of acute or chronic liver failure.
  • The Motility and Functional Bowel Disorders Program is one of only a handful of pediatric motility programs in the country, providing consultative and diagnostic services for infants, children and adolescents who have a wide variety of disorders resulting from abnormal movements or sensation in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • The Feeding, Swallowing and Nutrition Program provides complete evaluation and treatment for both simple and complex feeding and swallowing disorders. For patients already enrolled in the program an inpatient option is available.
  • The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program is nationally recognized for its treatments and research for Crohn's and ulcerative colitis. The program developed one of the largest pediatric genetic data banks to study the genetics of IBD in children.
  • The Liver Disease Program sees patients for conditions such as autoimmune hepatitis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, TPN cholestasis, biliary atresia, evaluation of jaundice, hepatomegaly, splenomegaly and elevated transaminases.
  • The NEW (Nutrition, Exercise and Weight Management) Kids™ Program manages the medical and psychosocial needs of severely overweight children and adolescents. An outcomes evaluation demonstrates that 62 percent of patients participating for a year improved their weight, and overall the group had significant decreases in cholesterol and triglycerides.
  • The Cyclic Vomiting Program was established in early 2006. The program is one of a kind treating this rare unexplained disorder of children that results in recurrent, prolonged episodes of severe vomiting, nausea and prostration with no apparent cause.
  • Twelve gastroenterology specialists are listed in the 2007-2008 Best Doctors in America® database. The 40,000 U.S. physicians who make the list represent the top 3 to 5 percent of the nation's practicing board-certified physicians.

Gastroenterology Team
Gastroenterology is comprised of board-certified/board-eligible pediatric gastroenterologists, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, psychologists, speech and language pathologists and dietitians. We provide comprehensive care to children with gastrointestinal and nutritional disorders.
