The Al McGuire Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin is a regional referral center that provides the highest level of pediatric critical care, meeting Level I guidelines of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The PICU provides highly specialized acute and intermediate care to critically ill children up to the age of 18 via state-of-the-art technologies and a 24-hour staff including nurses, critical care physicians, anesthesiologists, surgeons, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and other pediatric specialists.
Specialty Highlights
- Support one of only a few PICUs in the region utilizing Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) to assume the cardiopulmonary functions of children and enable their lungs and heart to rest and recover.
- Provide 24-hour physician coverage, with at least one pediatric residency trainee in each of the special care units and a pediatric critical care fellow stationed in the PICU.
Eleven of the Critical Care specialists are listed in the 2007-2008 Best Doctors in America® database. Nationally fewer than 3 to 5 percent of all physicians are listed.

Children's Hospital of Wisconsin Transport Services provides emergency transport to Children's Hospital via ambulance, airplane or helicopter and immediate physician consultation.

Fellows work to complete three primary goals: first and foremost, excellent care of critically ill children; secondly, development as teachers; and thirdly, achieving competence in both basic and clinical research.
