Because Children's Hospital of Wisconsin is committed to advancing health care for children, medical research is conducted at our hospital. This research may include drug trials to test promising new medications, clinical research that leads to better treatment protocols or laboratory research where investigators work to unlock the mysteries of childhood illnesses on a cellular level.

Participation in research is strictly voluntary, and no child ever is enrolled in a study without the informed consent of the child's parent or legal guardian.

The benefits of these studies are both immediate and far-reaching. Because we conduct research, many of the newest and most innovative treatments are available right now, here at Children's Hospital. In the larger scope, scientific learning undertaken here and shared with the medical community contributes to the advancement of pediatric health care worldwide.

Children's Hospital requires that research investigators must at all times protect the rights, privacy and welfare of individuals participating in research. The Human Research Review Board holds the primary responsibility to protect children involved in research studies. The board adheres to the Federal Guidelines for the Conduct of Research on Human Subjects. It also provides leadership, experience and expertise as a resource to advocate for the health and well-being of children.
