Genetics Center
The Genetics Center at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin is a program for children and adults with concerns about genetic disorders, birth defects and related issues.
We offer the following services:
- Diagnosis, education, counseling and medical management.
- Review of a family's history to find out if there is a risk of genetic disorders or a connection to the existing problem.
- Testing to help determine whether a person has a genetic disorder or could pass a disorder on to a child.
- Counseling before pregnancy or birth.
- Prenatal testing and counseling, including chorionic villus sampling.
- Support and follow-up.
- Referral to health specialists, community services, support groups and financial assistance resources.
- Teaching and training of professionals in genetics and related fields.
- Collaboration with local, national and international experts.
- Involvement in clinical research studies.
Evaluations may include:
- Collection and review of medical records.
- Review of the family medical history.
- Detailed physical exam.
- Tests, such as x-rays or blood work.
Counseling may include:
- Review of the future outlook for the patient.
- Information about the genetic disorder or birth defect.
- Advice for therapies and available medical management.
- Discussion of the chances for this to happen again.
- Suggestions on how to live with the conditions of the disorder.
- Referrals to other specialists or community support services.
In addition, Children's Hospital geneticists and genetic counselors work with the Reproductive Medicine Clinic at Froedtert and Medical College to test embryos for certain genetic disorders before implantation. Click to find out more about the Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis Program. |
