Audiology Clinic

At the Masters Family Speech and Hearing Center, infants, children and adolescents are evaluated for hearing problems. Typical reasons children are referred to us may include hearing concerns, speech and language delays, learning problems in school, failed newborn hearing screenings and recurrent ear infections.

Audiometric evaluations, hearing aid evaluations and fittings, and hearing aid orientation are important parts of this program. Parent counseling and follow-up are provided. When needed, we facilitate referrals for medical evaluations, additional assessments or referrals to treatment programs or schools.

We offer diagnosis and treatment for:

• Sensorineural hearing loss.
• Conductive hearing loss.
• Mixed hearing loss.
• Auditory neuropathy/dysynchrony.
• Auditory processing disorders.

What happens at a visit?
First, staff talk with the parents or guardians to develop a detailed case history. Then the child is seen in a sound-proof room where sounds are presented and responses are observed. A number of behavioral testing techniques are used depending on the age and developmental level of the child. The child also is evaluated for outer or middle ear abnormalities that may interfere with accurate testing results. If typical testing cannot be completed, the child may be referred for a special test called an auditory brainstem response, which may require sedation. Children with diagnosed hearing loss also are seen at the clinic for hearing aid fittings and follow-up appointments.

You will see a highly-skilled audiologist with a masters or doctoral degree in audiology. Appropriate referrals to other professionals, including a pediatrician, an ear, nose and throat physician or speech pathologist and others, may be made by the audiologist.

Outpatient/inpatient services:

• Age appropriate hearing evaluations, including visual reinforcement audiometry and conditioned play audiometry.
• Universal Newborn Hearing Screening.
• Natural sleep and sedated auditory brainstem response evaluations to determine hearing levels and/or for diagnosis.
• Distortion product otoAcoustic emissions and transient evoked otoAcoustic emissions to evaluate the integrity of peripheral outer hair cell function.
• Monitoring for ototoxicity.
• Auditory processing evaluations.
• Hearing aid evaluations, fitting and orientation, including digital technology.
• Assistive listening devices consultations including FM systems, telephone amplifiers, etc.
• Custom swim plugs.
• Custom hearing protection.
