The Pediatric Epilepsy Center specializes in the treatment of epilepsy in children, especially those with unusual or difficult to control seizures. Medical treatment is offered for all types of seizures, and epilepsy surgery is offered for certain types of seizures. Our pediatric neurologists and pediatric epileptologists are experienced with conventional antiseizure drugs, as well as newer medications developed in recent years. For children with intractable seizures, four advanced treatment alternatives are available: the newest antiepileptic medications, the vagal nerve stimulator, the ketogenic diet and epilepsy surgery. Surgical results are excellent, thanks to experienced pediatric neurologists, pediatric epileptologists and neurosurgeons.

What happens at a clinic visit?
You may be asked to have an electroencephlogram (EEG) on the same day as or before your appointment with the neurologist. Bring test results, such as EEG or MRIs, with you from other facilities if you have them. During the visit you will have a neurological exam, talk with the nurse and physician about test results and discuss treatment methods. You may be scheduled for additional testing at a later date.
Who will I see?
The Pediatric Epilepsy Center works closely with a team of specially trained nurses, psychologists, social workers and neurophysiology technologists. You may see a technologist for an EEG test before your appointment with the neurologist. You will see a nurse, a nurse practitioner and neurologist. You also may see a social worker.
Multidisciplinary care It takes many people to care for a child. We provide multidisciplinary care, which means we have a team of specialists available to care for all of your child's needs. They include doctors, nurses, therapists, child life specialists, respiratory care practitioners, pharmacists, dietitians, psychologists, social workers, laboratory and radiology technologists, volunteers, pastors and even clowns. |
