Velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) is a multi-system disorder caused by a deletion of the q11.2 position of chromosome 22. It is currently associated with more than 186 physical, medical and neurodevelopmental findings that include:

  • Heart defects.
  • Palate abnormalities.
  • Immune deficiencies.
  • Hypocalcemia.
  • Subtle facial dysmorphology.
  • Speech/language delays and disorders.
  • Fine and gross motor difficulties.
  • Learning disabilities.
  • ADHD.
  • Poor social skills.
  • Small stature.
  • Orthopedic issues.

Because of the wide spectrum and variable degree of expression of the findings, VCFS is significantly under diagnosed and therefore under treated.

Children's Hospital of Wisconsin offers a multidisciplinary clinic designed to address the various medical, educational, and psychosocial needs of the children and their families with this syndrome. The team provides coordinated care and individualized case management by experienced professionals. They include:

  • Speech-language pathology.
  • Otolaryngology.
  • Audiology.
  • Psychology.
  • Occupational therapy.
  • Physical therapy.
  • Immunology.
  • Gastroenterology.
  • Other specialists as needed, such as Cardiology, Orthopedics, Endocrinology, Plastic surgery or Dental.

Location

  • Children's Hospital of Wisconsin Clinics  Building.
  • Clinic visits range from 4-6 hours depending on the number of specialists a patient needs to see.
  • Insurance pre-authorizations and referrals may be necessary. Each specialist bills separately.
