MILWAUKEE (3/21/2013) - Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and Sojourner Family Peace Center applauded the Wisconsin Building Commission's unanimous bi-partisan approval today to fund $10.6 million (half of the overall cost) to build the Family Justice Center, a first-of-its-kind model in Milwaukee. The new, centrally- located facility will provide adult and child-focused services to families from all over the state.
The proposal includes an on-site shelter for victims, law enforcement services, medical and social services, legal services, district attorney services, mental health and AODA counseling, faith-based services in a building to be built at 619 W. Walnut Street in Milwaukee.
"As a survivor of domestic abuse, I can tell you that to have all of these services in one building is a blessing. There are many barriers to seeking help. My biggest fear was leaving one building, going out in public and not knowing if someone would be waiting outside for me," explained Jodine Basterash, domestic abuse survivor.
According to the Children's Trust Fund, Wisconsin spends $8.07 million to protect our children from abuse and neglect and 83 times as much - $673 million - to repair the damage done by abuse.
Providers and government agencies housed at The Family Justice Center will include:
- Sojourner Family Peace Center
- Children's Hospital of Wisconsin (Child Advocacy Center/Child Protection Center, Child Abuse Prevention Fund, Prevent Child Abuse Wisconsin, WI CAN, and Project Ujima)
- Milwaukee Police Department
- Milwaukee County District Attorney's office
- Milwaukee Public Schools
- Job Training Agency Partner
- Suburban law enforcement representatives
- Legal Action
